What happens to the town?

Most Traveller material treats the starport from the point of view of the people passing through it. Shore Leave looks at it from the point of view of the people who cannot leave: the bartenders, police, taxi drivers, hoteliers, criminals, families and officials who know exactly what happens when the Fleet comes in. 

This 40-page supplement provides a complete toolkit for turning a routine port call into an adventure. Ports are defined by Dependence, Friction and Saturation, measuring how badly the town needs visiting crews, how much it resents them, and just how overwhelming this particular visit has become. Those numbers feed into prices, policing, civilian reactions, crime, availability and the increasingly desperate attempts of everyone involved to get through Fleet Night intact.

Inside you’ll find:

• Liberty Footprint and Saturation rules for determining what hundreds of personnel suddenly ashore actually do to a settlement.

• The Second Economy, covering surge pricing, temporary work, scams, illicit markets and the things that mysteriously become unavailable when the Fleet arrives.

• Jurisdiction and Political Weight, for answering the awkward question of what happens when Imperial personnel break local law.

• Liberty Briefs, including restrictions, unusual local laws, hazards and establishments declared Off Limits.

• A complete Shore Patrol procedure, including approaches, fatigue, Incident Points and a d66 table of calls. A four-hour patrol watch can provide an entire session without a prepared adventure. 

• Liberty Escalation, from normal liberty through curfew, alcohol bans and finally everyone being confined aboard because one idiot ruined it for eight hundred people. 

• Tables for civilian attitudes, Startown businesses, company and complications, and what is left behind the morning after.

• Guidelines for how the same port reacts to Marines, Scouts, mercenaries, Sword Worlders, Zhodani, Aslan, Vargr, Darrians, corporate security and Free Traders. 

• An addendum extending the system to merchant traffic, passenger vessels, the Army, mercenaries, pilgrims, refugees and other organised visitors. 

Shore Leave is written for naval Travellers, Shore Patrol crews, civilians caught in Fleet Night, or referees who want Startown to be something more than three bars, a weapon shop and the next patron encounter.

Nobody is entirely in the right. The town complains about the Navy and lives on the Navy. The ratings behave badly and get robbed blind. The police resent the Shore Patrol but are relieved when it takes problems away.

But what are solo roleplaying games? To put it succinctly, they are games designed specifically for a solitary player. It’s you, the game, your imagination and maybe some dice, cards, tokens, minis, paper, pen, and/or other tools—it depends on the game.

Solo RPGs have been around in one form or another for decades. Some early examples include solo rules like Tunnels & Trolls, the Invisible Ink line of solo adventures for Basic Dungeons & Dragons and gamebooks like the Fighting Fantasy series. Solo RPGs have only grown from there, with a resurgence in 2020 which shows no signs of slowing down! The category has expanded though, and now includes games that are rules lite to those with more crunch, cozy to dark, narrative-heavy to strategy-based, etc. The options are endless and oftentimes you’ll see a mix of game types.

Today we’re going to focus on journaling games. Mostly because these are the games I currently prefer to play. It’s a different way to embody a character and play the part as solo games tend to be more narrative-focused and will usually be on the rules lite end of the spectrum. The basic premise of these games is that the character you are playing is expected to chronicle their experiences. It is an essential part of playing. You take on the role of a character and write in your journal, or a letter or in a log book. I’m going to add here that you can totally record a podcast or video if you want. Whatever works for you, as long as it’s in character.

But how do you know what to record? Each game provides guidelines around this, usually in the form of prompts. These are randomly triggered using dice, playing cards or some other randomiser. Prompts can be as simple as keywords in a table or in the form of questions, specific events and other details. And the beauty of it is, you can chronicle as many words as you want. Some games will encourage you to write less but say more. If you feel your character is meticulously detailed, be as verbose as you want. If they are a person of few words, don’t be afraid to bullet point. There are no hard rules when it comes to games, only guidelines.

Probably the most well known journaling game is Thousand Year Old Vampire by Tim Hutchings. This game prompts you to experience the weathering impact of the immortal life of a vampire. It plays heavily on memories, forming and losing them over a long period of time. You start as a human sometime in the past, learning about actual history and your character as they grow and change, right up until their second death as a vampire. Prepare to be sad.

New in Town by Cutest Patoot Games is about arriving in a new place, reminding yourself of all the possibilities that brings and everything you might sometimes forget you’re capable of. It’s cosy, it’s introspective and, if you like Animal Crossing, you’ll probably enjoy this!

For Small Creatures Such As We from Blackwell Games is a science fiction journaling game that has a little bit more crunch. You are a human captain in charge of an alien crew. Choose their skills and customise your spaceship before going off on missions, tackling events and learning more about each other. It’s on the cosy side but there are expansions that can add war to your universe or help you explore relationships, from platonic to something more adult.

If you’re looking for a darker experience then Exclusion Zone Botanist from Exeunt Press should scratch that itch. You are a botanist assigned to explore and document the Exclusion Zone flora. Get in. Discover and document. Get out. It’s a mix of journaling, drawing and hex crawling, wrapped up in horror. A stand-alone sequel will be crowdfunded soon, so if you enjoy EZB, keep your eyes peeled for it!

I’ve saved my favourite for last. Reincarnated as the Unlovable Villainess?! by Wym Lawson. You have been reincarnated into an otome (dating sim) game as the villainess and all endings lead to doom! You don’t have to be familiar with the isekai romance fantasy genre to play but it helps. It also comes with additional settings: paranormal, wuxia, school, and idol.

These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to solo journaling games. There are so many out there and I hope you can find one you enjoy. If journaling doesn’t appeal then that’s okay. Maybe my next column might, I’ll talk about how to play a group game or adventure, solo.

The campaign went live on 30th August and passed $2 million in less than 24 hours. What’s even more interesting is, that despite the core game being available for $99, the average pledge is currently trending at just over $375 per backer.

But what is the game? And who are first time Kickstarter creators Flasgitz behind it?

Who are Flashgitz?

Flashgitz is an independent animation studio created by Tom Hinchliffe and Don Greger, and English-American duo who met through Newsgrounds and have been producing animated comedy together for well over a decade. Their YouTube channel has grown to more than 5 million subscribers, with a catalogue built around deliverately provocative, frequently crude parodies of games, films, internet culture and popular franchises.

One of Flashgitz’s earliest animations was Inside GW, which I would share here but it’s age restricted so won’t embed the video, so please follow this link to view it if you’d like to. Inside GW was released in 2013 and lampooned Games Workshop and its business practices. They went on to produce considerably more direct Warhammer 40,000 fan animations, most notably their Furry Crusades series featuring Black Templars slaughtering armies of furries.

Space King has taken a different approach. Rather than usual actual Warhammer characters and terminology, it’s created its own exaggerated grimdark universe. Humanity worships the mysterious Space King while enormous armoured Psycho Warriors rampage around the galaxy fighting aliens, one another, and occasionally their own astonishing stupidity.

The inspiration is hardly difficult to stop, the characters, terminology, and setting all belong to Flashgitz.

So, what happened with Games Workshop?

The history here is sometimes described online as though Games Workshop specifically forced Flashgitz to stop making Warhammer animations, but there doesn’t actually appear to be any good evidence that they were given a direct cease-and-desist.

What definitely happened though, was that in 2021 Games Workshop adopted a much more restrictive approach to fan animation due to it’s own development ands expansion of the Warhammer+ streaming service. Games Workshop changed their IP guidance explicitly prohibiting fan-made games ands animations without a license. This change caused a fair amount of anxiety among Warhammer fan creators and contributed to several prominent animation projects being discontinued, or moving under GW’s control.

Flashgitz moved away from directly using Warhammer IP and started developing their own Space Kings universe. Space Kings gave them something that was still capable of parodying the excesses of the Warhammer 40,000 universe while also becoming an IP Flashgitz had complete control over themselves. Which has led to them creating, and launching, the Space Kings boardgame.

Falashgitz TX LLC filed US trademark applications covering SPACE KING and FLASHGITZ, including applications covering board games, tabletop games and tabletop RPGs. The Space King tabletop application was filed in February 2026.

The problem is that Games Workshop already has something called Flash Gitz.

Flash Gitz are the heavily armed, ostentatious Ork mercenaries that have existed within Warhammer 40,000 for years and remain part of the current Ork range and rules.

On 20th August 2026, just ten days before the Space KingKickstarter launched, Games Workshop filed a formal opposition before the US Trademark Trial and Appeal Board against Flashgitz TX LLC’s attempt to register FLASHGITZ for tabletop games.

So whilst there doesn’t seem to have been previous legal issues between the two over the animations, there is now a genuine trademark dispute taking place between the two companies.

Ok, but what is this $3 million+ Space King game?

SPACE KING: The Board Game is a 2-4 player semi cooperative game in which players control Psycho Warriors battling aliens while also attempting to undermine each other. The game comes packed with large PVC miniatures, with the Psycho Warriors standinf around 50mm tall and some of the bosses reaching more than 100mm.

The basic Recruit pledge costs $99 and gives you one copy of the game, but with an average pledge of $375 backers are obviously going in for a lot more.

By far the runaway most popular award is the next step up for the base $99 pledge. This is quite a jump though, but so far over 5,500 people have pledged for the $299 Psycho Warrior pledge level. This not only gives you the base game, but also the War World Expansion, b-Positive Expansion, Psycho Warrior Pack, Weapon Pack, Space King Favor, Lore Book and also any stretch goals that the campaign unlocks.

There are, of course, higher levels. The Super Psycho Warrior pledge is $699 and upgrades you to a metal box for the base game and a War World Medal with the signatures of Tom and Don on. Almost 950 people have backed at this level so far. The $1999 Psycho Monster pledge gives you everything from earlier tiers plus a short custom audio message from a Space King character of your choice.

The highest pledge level was limited to 15 backers, and have all been snapped up. The Globulus Maximus pledge gives you everything mentioned already plus the backer gets to appear as a Psycho Warrior in a future episode of SPACE KING! It would have put you back $7,777 (@ £5,760) though, but the kids don’t have to go to college do they?

Burgle Bros 3: Future Flip, the latest instalment in Fowers Games popular cooperative heist series, is arriving in UK and European retail this week. This new game takes the familiar crew out of casinos and office blocks and drops them into a cyberpunk future dominated by artificial intelligence and distinctly unfriendly corporations. A dynamite-related mishap is responsible for the time travelling, leaving the gang to infiltrate corporate facilities, hack their systems, and ultimately dismantle the Mainframe while avoiding increasingly dangerous security.

The basic Burgle Bros formula remails recognisable, but Future Flip introduces several substantial new twists. Rooms are represented by double-sided tiles drawn from a bag as the building is explored, making its layout and security system more unpredictable from game to game.

The burglars themselves are also double-sided. Characters begin a heist disguised, providing some protection while infiltrating the building, but can eventually flip and gain a different ability. Security guards have been replaced by nine different cybernetic SysOps, each possessing its own abilities and capable of flipping into a more dangerous red-alert state as the situation escalates.

There is also a new social engineering element, with Corporate employees wandering the building who can be charmed into providing information and Program Cards. Those programs can then be combined to hack the SysOps standing between the crew and their target.

Designed by Tim Fowers and Skye Larsen, with artwork by Ryan Goldsberry, Burgle Bros 3: Future Flip is for 1-4 players and takes between 60-120 minutes to play. The box includes more than 32 rooms, nine playable characters, multiple cybernetic guards and AI bosses of varying difficulty.

It’s a considerably more technological job than the Burgle Bros are accustomed to, but apparently even oppressive future megacorporations aren’t safe from a sufficiently determined group of thieves.

I started my roleplaying journey in 1984, which happened to be close to forty years after the end of World War II. At the time, many vets from the war were still alive and for many of us were our grandfathers. And if you lived in that time and your family was anything like mine, you would hear the stories. Stories like the time my grandfather, who was in the Military Police, was assigned to a train that took off on him and he spent three days in the European countryside trying to catch up to it (now that I think about it, that story might have been slightly exaggerated). Not too surprisingly, when I started playing TTRPGs, forty years after the fact, RPGs dealing with World War II were popular, such as FASA’s Behind Enemy Lines, GURPS WWII, and Godlike (which was essentially superheroes in World War II).

Believe it or not, I didn’t come here to advocate for a return to World War II/Noir in roleplaying games though that is always a compelling genre to explore. Rather, I’m more interested in noting that a forty-year difference is enough time for most people to start romanticizing an era and wanting to explore that as a fictional setting. And what was 40 years ago from now? The 1980s.

We can already see the nostalgia engine firing up with TV shows like Stranger Things. It seems to have taken a little longer than usual, because by the 1980s there was definitely nostalgia for the 1960s, but many things ‘80s are starting to come back (for example, my brand new Commodore 64 Ultimate sitting on my desk), not the least of which is the music. And why not, since you can’t find any new rock groups on the radio anymore—at least not here in the United States? And there’s already an established alternate history version of the 1980s that has existed since… well, the 1980s.

Imagine the time (at least in the United States). It’s been about ten years since the end of the Vietnam War and many of the veterans returned to the United States changed by war. Having difficulty fitting back into regular society, many of them take up the most logical profession imaginable: investigating crime. And there’s this vast landscape of interconnected hot spots: In Hawaii, a guy with a prominent mustache runs a PI outfit, drives a hot red Ferrari, and has taken up permanent residence in the guest house of a famous author. Together with two wartime buddies, one with links to the criminal underworld, and the other who flies a rent-a-chopper, they investigate murderers, drug lords, corrupt businesspeople, and more. Meanwhile in the Califronia Marina Town of King Harbor, two Vietnam War vets, a technology geek and his robot, and an ugly helicopter team up for private investigation to bring in the bad guys. In Boston, a former police officer in a vintage 1966 Mustang Fastback who is well read, highly moral, and sharp witted taps a network of key contacts to solve crimes and brings villains to justice. In Miami, two cops in the VICE department have the hottest cars, the coolest threads, not to mention theme music piped in directly from MTV every week as they take down drug lords who are using their city as the pipeline to import drugs from South America into the United States.

And it gets weirder. One man drives an indestructible 1982 black Trans-Am with an artificial intelligence that can drive itself and launch into the air from a level surface; he roams the United States from coast to coast, working for a public service organization that fights crime and is funded by a billionaire. In Los Angeles, a cop and his holographic artificially intelligent friend who could summon a car on command, and their friends take on crime. In New York City, a man who could transform into a panther, an eagle, a snake, or a number of other animals investigates crime and has adventures. And along the Utah-Arizona border, a man and his team keep a stolen, nearly indestructible military test helicopter, which they use to take on groups of organized bad guys.

And there’s more I haven’t even mentioned, but you should see a pattern here. Pick a city or region, add a group of friends who very well might have seen some stuff in Vietnam, add in something unusual (usually some kind of futuristic tech, an indestructible vehicle, an artificial intelligence, flashy clothes, government contacts, or extravagant wealth that doesn’t actually belong to you), and you have the premise for your very own action RPG in the 1980s.

But why the ‘80s and not something more recent? Well, the 1980s had computers but no internet. It had the very first mobile phones, but most people didn’t own them and there were no cell phone towers. It was a time when we saw technology emerging in new and exciting ways, but we didn’t yet have the full picture of what that technology would actually look like or do to society once it got here. The ‘80s is an optimistic time, with a sense of rebirth, renewal, and optimism. The future’s so bright, you’ve got to wear shades!

Welcome to Retrowave, an idealized, hyper-stylized, idealized version of the decade that focuses on palm trees at dusk, glowing neon lights, smooth synthwave music, and a romanticism of pop culture. If you lived through it, it’s a shameless exploration of all the things that made you who you are today. And if you aren’t old enough to have lived through it, there’s a lot of great television out there where you can catch up. It’s the perfect sandbox for RPGs because it uses small groups of friends with heroic tendencies, has larger than life villains, and involves fist fights without consequences, and a little bit of gun play was overlooked by the cops so long as it was used to take out the bad guys. In the ‘80s we dreamed of partying like it was 1999, but now we want to go back to 1984.

This genre is currently grossly under-served by existing tabletop roleplaying games, but you know, I think it’s an alternate history genre whose time has come.

Developed in partnership with STUDIOCANAL, the game is based on James Cameron’s 1991 Terminator 2: Judgment Day and is a 1-3 player cooperative stragegy game where you are all playing against the T-1000 Terminator, or a 1-4 player 1-vs-many mode where one player takes control of the T-1000.

In the main cooperative mode players take control of Sarah Connor, John Connor, and the T-800, comleting objectives across three chapters inspired by locations and events from the film while being relentlessly pursued by the T-1000.

Whilst the liquid-metal T-1000 Terinator is usually controlled by the game itself, in the four player version of the game one of the players takes command of the T-1000 and hunts down the other players.

The game includes a Noise system, with various actions from the players creating varying levels of noise. Noise is the mechanism that the T-1000 uses to track, learn, and adapt from the heroes behaviour. As the players complete objectives, and make other breakthroughs, the T-1000 becomes more dangerous and receives various upgrades.

The heroes are not helpless though. They have a shared progression grid and the team makes collective decisions about acquiring gear, allies, dice upgrades, and charater specific abilities.

There are also multiple ways for the players to prevent Judgment Day, with three Final Missions allowing the players to destroy Skynet, hack Skynet, or expose Cyberdyne’s plans to the public.

The publisher behind the game, Cation Arts, are based in Abu-Dhabi and have a good track record with their previous crowdfunding campaigns, including the range of All Time Wresting titles.
